Mel is dead and nobody lit a candle. Patch 26.22 landed a couple of days back, the nerf bat found her, and the ladder just kept rolling like nothing happened. No 4k-upvote meltdown thread. No farewell montage set to sad piano. Just a quiet mass unsubscribe from a pick half the server had already stopped respecting.

What 26.22 Actually Did

This patch is big. Not “we fixed two tooltips” big, actual content-shift big, and the part everyone latched onto is that Mel mains are the ones holding the short straw. If she was your comfort pick, your comfort is gone. Meanwhile the TFT crowd walked away grinning, because their half of the notes reads like a gift basket.

Here is how patch day actually works for 99% of us. You open the notes, hit Ctrl+F, type your champ name, and that is the entire ritual. Nobody reads the full document. So a patch this size lands as eight million people each reading one paragraph, and the champ who got hit hardest gets mourned by exactly the people who mained her.

And that is why this one slid by so quietly. Mel was never the main character of the ladder. She was a pick you ran into on Tuesday, lost to, and forgot about by Thursday. Big patches have main characters, and she was not one, so the nerf registered somewhere between a footnote and a shrug.

Two days in, you can already feel the lobby math changing. Pick rate is the fastest thing to move after a nerf, every single time. Winrate lags behind by days because the diehards keep forcing it, which is why the first graph you see after a patch lies straight to your face. Wait for the dust. Then read the numbers.

Why This Matters If You Never Touched Her

Because patch day is the most profitable window on the ladder and most of you sleep through it. For about a week everybody is playing something slightly wrong. Comfort picks got moved, items got shuffled, and half your lobby is still running last patch plans on this patch game. That gap is free LP if you bother to look.

The one-trick lesson is harsher. If one line in one patch note can delete your account entire identity, you never had a champ pool, you had a hostage situation. I said this last month and I will keep saying it: two champs per role is not tryharding, it is insurance. Mel mains are paying the premium right now.

Then there is the TFT pull. When one half of the notes is a party and the other half is a funeral, players migrate, some of them mid-climb. Translation: your next week of games has more lobbies with someone who is mentally already in another queue. Wild, right? Those games are winnable in a way they were not last week.

And the one-tricks who stay? They are about to drag the pick winrate through the floor out of pure spite. That is not a meta read, that is human nature. Which is also why day three after a nerf is the best possible moment to believe absolutely nobody.

Real Talk: Play the Patch, Not Your Feelings

Rule one after a big patch: stop blind-picking. If your champ got touched, you do not first-pick her into an open draft on day three while you still do not know the numbers. Hover it, watch the enemy hover, hold your lane answer back. Patch literacy is a mechanic, same as last-hitting.

Rule two: when in doubt, dodge. Yeah, the LP hurts. One dodge costs you less than four losses spent forcing a pick that does not work anymore, and you know which one it is inside the first ninety seconds of champ select. I dodge more in week one of a patch than the rest of the cycle combined, and my winrate loves it.

Rule three, and here is where it gets interesting: the stuff that never changes on patch day is the stuff worth practising. Wave states, ward timings, when to give up a plate, how to reset properly. That is patch-proof. Look, you cannot buy game sense, but you also do not have to eat eight autofill coinflips a night to prove a point. If solo queue is genuinely breaking you, our LoL boost is right there, and then you grind the fundamentals in a bracket that actually rewards them.

Rule four: pick your patch-day champ by what the enemy cannot punish, not by what sounds fun in the notes. Early patch lobbies are chaos, drafts are sloppy, and the people who win that week are playing something that does not need a perfect comp to function. Boring wins week one. Always has.

The Verdict

Honestly? This patch is fine. Big, messy, a bit random, and Mel got the short end, because that is what balance looks like in a game with this many moving parts. Riot is not out to get your champ. They are swinging at a piñata in the dark and sometimes your main is the piñata.

What I have no patience for is the cope. Every single patch, the same thread: my champ is unplayable, the game is dead, Riot hates fun. Then two weeks later that same champ sits at a 50% winrate with a smaller, better player base and nobody apologises. It happens every time. Every time.

The actual skill this patch rewards is adaptability, and barely anyone has it. Being able to drop a pick you love in the week it stops working is a harder mechanic than any combo you have ever drilled. Most players would rather lose 40 games on principle. I respect the commitment and I think it is clown behaviour.

And the TFT half deserves its flowers, because it is the genuinely good news story here. One set of players lost a champ. The other set got a reason to open the client every night for a month. If you have been bouncing off ranked and hating your games, maybe just go play the mode that is currently having a good time?

Prediction, and hold me to it: by the end of this patch cycle Mel winrate is back up and the one-tricks are calling her sleeper OP, because every nerf filters out the casuals and leaves the specialists. Then she gets a quiet compensation buff within two patches, the exact same people who wrote her off reinstall, and we run this whole episode again with a different name in the headline. Same script, new cast.
