The Competitive unlock requirement

Before an account can queue Competitive at all, Overwatch 2 requires you to win 20 Unranked matches — a one-time gate that applies to new and returning players, lowered from the old 50-win requirement in an August 2025 update. Only wins count toward the 20, so the real number of games behind it is higher, and the requirement exists to make sure players understand the roster before they enter ranked. An unlock order simply plays out those winning Unranked (Quick Play) games until the gate is cleared and Competitive opens on the account.

Full unlock vs remaining-wins-only

You do not have to start from zero if you have already made a dent in the 20. The order supports either a full unlock from scratch or just the remaining wins, so if you are, say, halfway there, you pay for the wins still needed rather than the whole gate again. The price scales with how many wins are actually left, which keeps a partial unlock honest — you are charged for the work that remains, not a flat unlock fee.

After unlocking — placements next

Clearing the 20 wins only opens Competitive; it does not place you on the ladder. The next step is your first ranked run, so many players follow an unlock straight into a first 10 placements to seed an opening rank, or go on to start a ranked climb toward a target tier.
