Five champions. One patch. The nostalgia experiment just stopped being an experiment. LoL Classic patch 3 landed this morning and it is officially the biggest one yet, with five new champions dropping into the throwback client alongside another round of balance changes. And yeah, I know what half of you are thinking, because I thought it too when patch 2 shipped with a grand total of zero new champs.
What Actually Dropped
The headline is simple and it is loud. Patch 3 is the biggest LoL Classic update so far, and the reason is the champion count: five of them, all at once, into a roster that has been deliberately tiny since day one. That is not a trickle. That is a structural change to the pool.
Add the balance pass on top and you get a client that no longer plays the way it did last week. Every champion added to a small pool does more damage to the meta than a champion added to a huge one. Basic math. When your roster is small, five new picks is a percentage shift nobody in ranked is ready for.
Compare it to patch 2, which shipped balance changes and nothing else. I wrote at the time that a throwback mode with no new content is a museum, not a game. Apparently somebody agreed. This is the correction.
The MOBA throwback framing matters here too, because the whole selling point was a smaller, cleaner game. Five champions is a lot of clean to spend at once. Wild swing.
Why This Wrecks Your Ranked Games
Here is the part nobody in the hype threads is saying out loud. New champions in a small pool means the draft you have memorised is dead. Every lane matchup you learned by repetition is now a coinflip against something you have played twice.
And it is worse in a throwback client than in the main game, honestly. LoL Classic players lean hard on pattern recognition because the pool is small enough to actually memorise. That is the entire skill expression for a huge chunk of the playerbase. Patch 3 just deleted a chunk of it.
Then there is the blind-pick chaos. Five fresh champions means five champions nobody has learned to punish yet, which means the first two weeks are pure instalock roulette. Your teammates will first-time them. In ranked. Repeatedly.
The balance changes stack on top of that. Even if you dodge every new pick, the champions you already play got touched, and the ones you play against got touched too. Nothing about your matchup knowledge is safe right now. Not even close.
Real Talk: How To Actually Play This Week
Look, the correct play in any patch this size is not to learn all five. It is to learn which one is broken and ban the other four out of your head. Pick the single new champion that fits a role you already play and ignore the rest until the dust settles.
The thing is, early-patch LMR is not about mastery, it is about information. Whoever knows the cooldowns wins. Spend one custom game reading the new kits instead of five ranked games discovering them the hard way at 20 minutes with a 0-4 scoreline.
And play safe against what you do not recognise. Not passive, safe. Give up the trade you are unsure about, farm, and let the enemy first-timer misplay a spell they have used nine times total. That is free LP in every early patch, in every game, forever.
Real talk though, none of that fixes the teammate who hard-feeds on a champion released this morning. That is not a you problem, and grinding through it is how good players lose 200 LP in a week. If the patch chaos is eating your climb alive, let someone else eat the coinflip games and come back when the meta settles.
The Verdict
I think this is the patch that decides whether LoL Classic is a real mode or a nostalgia tour. Zero champions in patch 2, five in patch 3, is not a content cadence. It is a panic button.
But it is the right panic button, and I will defend that. A throwback client with a frozen roster dies in six weeks because there is nothing to learn. Give people new picks and suddenly there is a reason to log in on Tuesday.
The risk is obvious. The whole pitch was simplicity, and five champions at once is how you start the slow walk back to the champion bloat everybody was escaping in the first place. Do this three more times and Classic is just LoL with a different launcher.
Honestly? I will take the risk. A game that is alive and slightly messy beats a game that is clean and empty. Ask anyone who has queued a dead mode at midnight.
Prediction: within two weeks, at least one of these five gets a hard nerf, the community picks exactly one of them as the broken pick, and patch 4 ships fewer than five champions because somebody upstairs gets nervous. Screenshot this one.
