Every healer in Rivals just got slower. All of them. At once. Not one nerf line buried in a balance post, but a global change to how the entire Strategist roster builds ultimate energy, dropped in the Season 10 notes yesterday and going live this morning. And honestly? If you have been carried by a triple-support comp in ranked for the last few weeks, I have bad news and I am going to enjoy delivering it.
What actually dropped
Let's start with the headline nobody is reading because Gorr the God Butcher is on the splash screen. The Season 10 balance post has a global change for Strategists: healing-to-energy conversion goes from 70% to 65%, and damage-to-energy goes from 55% to 50%. Five points each. On paper that is nothing. In a fight, that is a Luna or Mantis ult that shows up one push later than the enemy expects.
The rest of the notes are loud. Scarlet Witch gets what the devs call a completely new curse, which in patch-speak means rework, not a numbers pass. Black Cat is getting her phantom-like finesse tweaked. Wolverine's rage gets even sharper, which is a sentence I did not want to read. And Angela sits at the top of the Vanguard section, so the Asgardian assassin is getting touched too.
Then there is the lore side, because Season 10 is called Butcher's Blasphemy and it is not subtle. Gorr has, per the notes, assassinated two deities back-to-back and finally shown his face. There is a new serial, new Gorr lore titled All Gods Will Die, and new Loki lore called Journey into Mystery. Which is funny, because a few days back Loki straight-up vanished from the roster and NetEase said nothing.
Dev Vision Vol. 21 with Guangguang and Zhiyong filled in the rest: a new map, events, a new costume series, and Zhiyong walking through the balance plans. The update itself starts at 09:00 UTC today with about two hours of maintenance. So by the time most of EU is done with lunch, the healer nerf is live and your Discord is already arguing about it.
Why this is bigger than it looks
Here's the thing about ult economy in this game. Strategist ults are not damage, they are time. A well-timed support ult turns a lost fight into a stall, a stall into a regroup, and a regroup into a point cap that should never have happened. Anyone above Gold knows the feeling of hitting a perfect dive and watching the whole enemy team refuse to die.
Cut the charge rate by five points on both healing and damage and the math shifts in a direction most players will feel before they understand. Fewer support ults per round. Longer windows where the enemy backline has no panic button. Dives that actually convert. And crucially, that famous rotation where the second healer ults the moment the first one ends? Slower. Maybe gone.
I said it last season and I will say it again: triple-Strategist comps were a crutch, not a strategy. They worked because ult uptime was absurd, not because the players running them were smart. Now the crutch has a wobble in it. The teams that adapt are the ones that already knew how to win a fight without pressing Q.
And look, the Scarlet Witch rework matters here too, because a fully new kit landing in the same patch as a support nerf is a recipe for a chaotic first week. New Wanda, weaker healers, Gorr hype pulling in returning players who have not touched ranked in months. Your lobbies are about to get wild. Is that good or bad for your rank? Depends entirely on whether you read this before queueing.
Real talk — what to steal from this patch
First rule of a global Strategist nerf: play the tempo, not the scoreboard. Track enemy healer ults like a pro team does, out loud, in comms, every single fight. The numbers changed, so the old mental timers are wrong. If you held a dive at a certain point last season because you knew the Luna ult was up, that same dive is now safer, and the enemy support probably has not recalibrated yet.
Second: the damage-to-energy nerf punishes the DPS-Strategist playstyle harder than people think. Supports who built ult by farming damage on tanks instead of healing just lost the same five points, so there is no escape hatch. If you main a healer, your job this season is prioritizing heals that build energy on people who actually need it, not spam on a full-health Vanguard.
Third, and this one is for the Duelist mains: dive is back on the menu. Not Vanguard-less full dive, that still gets deleted. But two-tank, two-Duelist, two-Strategist with a real focus target is going to be stronger than it was a week ago simply because the enemy panic button costs more. Wolverine getting sharper does not hurt that plan either.
Now, real talk. None of this helps if your randoms instalock three Duelists and flame the one healer left. Patch weeks are the most volatile weeks in ranked, and this one has a rework plus a global nerf plus a new villain pulling tourists into your lobbies. If you want to sit out the chaos and start the season where you actually belong, a Rivals boost from a player who already understands the new ult math is the least degenerate option on the table. Then climb from there on your own terms.
The verdict
I think this is the best balance change NetEase has shipped in a while, and I say that as someone who has been screaming about support ult uptime since roughly forever. Five percent is the right size. Ten would have deleted the role. Five makes you think.
Where I get nervous is Scarlet Witch. A completely new curse in the same patch as a healer nerf means every returning Wanda player is going to feel like a god for exactly one week, and then the numbers will get looked at. Every rework in this game has followed that arc. There is no reason to think this one is different.
The Loki situation is the funny part. He vanished from the roster days before a season named after a god killer, and the notes drop new Loki lore called Journey into Mystery. NetEase is doing bits. I respect it. But if you were a Loki main, your season just started with a question mark, and the balance post does not answer it.
The bigger point, though, is that Season 10 is a tempo season. Ult economy moved, dive got cheaper, and the first team to actually count enemy ults out loud wins the fight. That was always true. It is just a little more true now, and ranked is going to sort players by whether they noticed.
Prediction, and you can screenshot this: Scarlet Witch eats a hotfix nerf within two weeks, and the Strategist energy change stays exactly as written. The triple-support meta is dead in Diamond and above by the end of the season, and the people still running it will blame their DPS.
