Bees. They added bees. I read the news yesterday and my first reaction was that someone at Riot lost a bet. Then I actually sat with it for a minute, and now I think ARAM Mayhem augments are quietly the most interesting thing happening in LoL right now, and nobody on your friends list is going to take it seriously until it has already eaten their evening.
What Actually Dropped
The report is simple enough. Five new augments are coming to ARAM Mayhem with the next LoL patch. One of them is a giant bomb. One of them is bees. And one of them, per the write-up, might straight up kill you. That is the whole package, and honestly that is all it needed to be.
Notice what is not in that list. No champion reworks, no item overhaul, no system rewrite that takes three months to settle. Just five new cards shuffled into a mode that already runs on chaos. Mayhem was never pretending to be balanced, which is exactly why it can absorb something like bees without breaking.
I want to flag the honest part here. We do not have the full numbers yet, and anyone telling you the tier list already is guessing. What we know is the count, the flavour, and the fact that one augment is dangerous to its own owner. Everything past that is vibes until the patch is live.
But five is a lot. Five augments in a pool is not a sprinkle, it is a meaningful shift in what you can roll. And the one that can kill you? That is a design choice with actual teeth.
Why This Is Not Just Filler
Here is where it gets interesting. ARAM has spent years being treated as the mode you load when you are too tilted for ranked. Warmup queue. The place you go to not think. And the augment system has been slowly, quietly dismantling that reputation, because augments force decisions, and decisions are the thing ranked players are actually bad at.
Think about what an augment pick really is. Three options, limited information, no undo, and a game state that punishes you for picking the comfortable one. That is a draft phase compressed into eight seconds. If you are the player who always takes the safe stat stick instead of the swingy one, congratulations, you have just told me how you play Baron fights too.
A self-damaging augment is the purest version of this. It asks whether you can hold a liability for value. Most players cannot. Most players see the downside, flinch, and take the boring card, then lose anyway because boring does not win a mode built on nonsense.
So no, this is not filler. It is a free, low-stakes testing ground for the one skill that actually separates Plat from Diamond: picking the option that is better rather than the option that feels safer. Wild that it arrived with bees attached.
What You Can Steal for Ranked
Right, practical bit. ARAM Mayhem teaches teamfight spacing better than any ranked game you will play this week, because there is no lane phase to hide in. Twenty-five minutes of constant five-versus-five means you get more fight reps in one game than in four Summoner's Rift matches. Use that.
Specifically, watch your own positioning the moment a big augment goes off. Area denial tools, zone effects, anything that makes a chunk of the map hostile. In Mayhem you learn to read those instantly because they are everywhere. Then you load into ranked, someone drops a zone ult, and you move before you consciously decide to. That transfer is real and it is the cheapest free elo on offer.
Second thing. Practise taking the greedy augment on purpose, even when it feels wrong, and watch what happens. You will throw some games. You will also recalibrate what risk actually costs, which is the whole point. Your instinct is miscalibrated toward safety and the only fix is reps.
Look, you can grind fight reps all day and still lose 30 LP a night because your bot lane is playing a different game. Reps fix your mechanics, not your queue. If solo queue randoms are the thing holding your rank hostage, our LoL boost gets you to the bracket where your reps actually count for something.
The Verdict
I think augments are the best thing Riot has shipped to a side mode in years, and I will take the heat for that. Not because the individual cards are well tuned, most of them are not. Because they inject real decisions into a mode that had none, and decisions are what make a game worth replaying.
The counterargument is obvious. ARAM is supposed to be mindless, that is the appeal, and loading it with augments turns a beer-and-pretzels mode into homework. I hear it. I just do not buy it. Nobody is forced to optimise, and the players who want to turn their brain off will keep taking the first card on the left and having a perfectly fine time.
What actually worries me is the pool size. Five more augments means more variance, and more variance means more games decided at the roll rather than at the fight. There is a version of Mayhem that is pure slot machine, and we are a few patches of additions away from finding out where that line sits.
For now though? Bees. Honest-to-god bees in a game that takes itself extremely seriously at the pro level. Nothing has made me want to queue up more in months.
Prediction: the self-damaging augment gets a numbers nerf within two weeks of going live, because players will find the degenerate build that makes the drawback irrelevant and Riot will not enjoy watching it. The bees survive untouched. The bomb becomes a meme clip category by the end of the patch cycle.
