Kil’jaeden was the one who created the Lich King, and his purpose was to raise an army of undead to conquer Azeroth. The King was originally trapped with Frostmourne, so he eventually betrayed Kil’jaeden and merged with a human, Arthas Menethil.
Arthas eventually perished and Frostmourne was destroyed, so the new Lich King was Bolvar Fordragon, who swore to control the Scourge and protect the world from future threats.
Birth and Creation of the Scourge
The demon lord Kil’jaeden imprisoned Ner’zhul as he tried to escape. Kil’jaeden destroyed his body but kept his spirit, encasing it in a block of ice.
Due to the power that Kil’jaeden gave him, this being had the ability to control death itself. Thus, the demon lord created the Lich King, who rules over the Scourge and the dead.
However, the Scourge did not exist at first. Initially, the Lich King went to Northrend, where ice formed a throne – the Frozen Throne. Now that he was there, he could start to form the Undead Scourge and weaken the world as the Burning Legion came.
Personality
When the Lich King’s persona combined Arthas and Ner’zhul, he was immensely ruthless, cruel, and cynical.
Even though he had followers, he did not care for them. In fact, he often said that they were just minions for him to achieve his goals, disregarding them as nothing.
Since he had a great hatred for the living, he never hesitated to inflict sadistic punishments on the people who opposed him.
Enemies
It’s no surprise that the Lich King had numerous enemies. Some of the most notable ones are Tirion Fordring, Sylvanas Windrunner, and the Adventurers.
Leader of the Ancient Cruzade, Tirion Fordring was one of the Lich King’s greatest enemies. His purpose was to fight the Scourge, which, of course, opposed what the King wanted.
Although Tirion and the Lich King have fought multiple times, the King also has other enemies. Sylvana, for example, was the Banshee Queen of the Forsaken – under her ruling, the Forsaken sought to end the Scourge once and for all.
Finally, the Adventurers who fought in the Northrend war also opposed the Lich King, but their relationship with him was different. Instead of being angry, the King was amused and eventually said that his plan was to kill them all and make them his undead minions.
