What Is Sideswipe in Rocket League?

Psyonix recently announced Rocket League Sideswipe, which is the mobile adaptation of the car-based soccer game. Right now, it’s available in alpha mode in New Zealand and Australia. However, we’ve figured out how to get a working install to tell you all about it. That way, you’re ready when it hits your country!

Getting Started

Rocket League Sideswipe’s onboarding is short, and we like that. You’re introduced to each of the touch controls singularly. There are only three, so that’s not much to cover. That way, you’re jumping into the action fast. However, some people might wonder about how to control their car the best way. Luckily, there’s a tutorial that you can revisit anytime. Plus, you can practice with Exhibition or Freeplay mode!

Controls

Sideswipe from Rocket League is built solely on touch controls. There’s an even playing field for online matches. However, the controls aren’t as precise as the gamepad. Be prepared to deal with this.

We found that the controls worked well. However, if you get sweaty hands when things get heated, you may have more challenges. Just be prepared to pine and pout when you miss a shot!

Though there are only a couple of buttons on the screen, you can adjust their size and position. This customization helps you find the right options for you.

What’s nice here is the simple layout for the controls on Sideswipe. There isn’t much micromanaging that has to happen. As with the real Rocket League version, you can double jump, single jump, and boost. Players can make slick maneuvers, such as power shots, flicks, and aerials, and it’s all on a 2D plane.

Use the thumbstick to quickly change direction and see the built-in arrow all the time to boost into the air whenever you want. We feel that Psyonix built a mobile interpretation of the traditional game that is similar throughout. The controls hold their own; don’t miss out on this game!

Graphics

It’s not like Rocket League was ever known for its graphics. However, Sideswipe looks decent in action. The cars are sharp, the ball is detailed, and the effects are great and don’t get in the way.

There are three graphics presets and a built-in frame counter. That way, you can adjust the settings for the best frame rate for you and your device.

Gameplay

Despite Rocket League Sideswipe being in alpha-limited mode, there’s still tons of content. You can play 2-on-2 or 1-on-1 matches in standard soccer mode. There’s also 2-on-2 mode similar to basketball games. All of them work well, too!

More or less, this game plays like Rocket League but as a 2D version. It feels good to play it, and that’s all that really matters.
