Why You Should Start Playing DOTA 2

It’s 2020. The Esports landscape has never been more vast, more varied, more exposed, or more advanced. From Rainbow to Smite, the sheer technical brilliance displayed by the modern Esports titles is draw dropping.

However, all of these games Esports scenes have been built on a grass-roots foundation of those that came before. Counter-Strike, League, and the topic of today, DOTA.

With it being so far into the life cycle of DOTA, you could be forgiven for overlooking the game in favor of other, newer options. However, you would be remiss not to give it a glance.

Despite being as old as its namesake, DOTA 2 remains one of the most popular, most played, and most paid Esports in the world today. Its competitive scene is still thriving, and while it may not be growing like it used to, there is still plenty of competition to go around.

Seeing yourself improve in DOTA, or any MOBA is far more rewarding than other competitive titles. The sheer level of depth and technicality leaves you with a real sense of accomplishment and expertise that is hard to rival, especially compared to games that are, despite everything else, comparatively more straightforward like Counter-Strike.

This, combined with the remaining popularity of the game, is why you should pick it up and start playing. The gameplay is incredible, and the champions are wonderfully designed, so there is no doubt you’re going to find someone that suits your tastes.

However, traveler be warned, there is an accessibility problem when it comes to DOTA. We talked about how technical the game is, and how rewarding it is to master that technicality, but starting off with it is a severe challenge.

If you’ve played MOBAs before, you aren’t going to struggle with it as much. However, for a complete beginner, you’re going to want to do some prep work before you start playing. Luckily, the size of the community has given way to plenty of expert content creators who have made guides to help ease you into the game as smoothly as possible.

A quick search on YouTube is going to reveal hundreds of these videos, and we whole-heartily recommend watching as much as possible. Learn the different aspects of the game, builds, arenas, and champions. You don’t need to study like you are for an exam, but give yourself the chance to go into the game with some idea of what’s going on.

This is the biggest obstacle and downside when it comes to getting into DOTA, but again, the age of the game is your friend here. There has been ample time for creators to come up with systems and strategies to appeal to new players, so the resources you have at your fingertips are vast.

If you can make an effort, you’re going to realize that DOTA 2 is one of the world’s most popular Esports for a reason. It’s expertly crafted, visually stunning, and a treat to play. Even if losing is absolutely infuriating.
