Biggest League of Legends Events

There is no doubt that League of Legends is making an impact on the global e-sports community in addition to the evolution of sports viewing. These live events determine the better player and the winner of the prize money.

The amount of money usually influences the biggest events in the LoL community in the prize pool and the number of players involved. When there are more participants and more money, then there are higher stakes.

Considering the development of League of Legends in the last few years, it is no wonder that it dramatically influences e-sports all over. Therefore, when considering the biggest LoL events, it is a consideration of some of the largest e-sport events in the world.

LoL World Championship 2015

Spanning the entire month of October in 2015, this event made way for all future e-sports events. There was a prize pool of over two million dollars and about 36 million online viewers. The World Championship traveled among Paris, Brussels, London, and Berlin, collecting nearly 43,000 live viewers.

This event proved the growing popularity of e-sports, as millions of people streamed and attended to see the winning teams play their way to victory.

Viewers who did not attend the competition live were able to watch via YouTube under different gaming channels like Riot Games and New Viewers.

Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2017

Another substantial event in LoL history is the Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice, Poland. Though there was only a $250,000 prize pool, almost 173,000 people attended the competition in person, and 46 million watched online.

Sponsored by Intel, this competition is considered the largest e-sports event in the world; however, not all the credit goes to League of Legends. This event hosted matches for three different sports: LoL, StarCraft II, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The event collected attendees and views from players on two weekends—one at the end of February and the other in March.

While this competition was not solely dedicated to declaring a winner for League of Legends, the Intel Extreme Masters 2017 in Katowice demonstrated, once again, just how dominant e-sports are becoming in culture and society.

League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational 2018

The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational of 2018 is, perhaps, the most popular e-sports event. Even though it was not a championship, this competition goes to show the popularity of LoL.

The event garnered more than two billion hours streamed. Less than 7,000 people attended live, and more than 60 million people watched online. In total, these rack in billions of hours watched.

Spanning across May in 2018, the Mid-Season Invitational had a prize pool totaling more than $1.3 million. This is not too shabby, considering it was not even a championship event.

The Future of League of Legends Events

There are multiple League of Legends events that prove the superiority of the game within e-sports. As the popularity of e-sports rises globally, the best prediction for the future of LoL is that it only continues to grow- both in viewers and prize money.
